SLEEP DISTURBANCES

Sleep disorders are a group of conditions that affect the ability to sleep well on a regular basis. Whether they are caused by a health problem or by too much stress, sleep disorders are becoming increasingly common in India.

Most people occasionally experience sleeping problems due to stress, hectic schedules, and other outside influences. However, when these issues begin to occur on a regular basis and interfere with daily life, they may indicate a sleeping disorder.

Depending on the type of sleep disorder, people may have a difficult time falling asleep and may feel extremely tired throughout the day. The lack of sleep can have a negative impact on energy, mood, concentration, and overall health.

What is Sleep Disorder ?

Types of Sleep Disorders

  • INSOMNIA: Insomnia is a common sleep disorder that can make it hard to fall asleep, hard to stay asleep, or cause you to wake up too early and not be able to get back to sleep. You may still feel tired when you wake up.

  • NARCOLEPSY  : Narcolepsy causes you to suddenly fall asleep at any time no matter where you are. Often times, you fall asleep uncontrollably during unusual circumstances, such as while eating. People with narcolepsy are unable to regulate their sleep-wake cycle.

  • REM SLEEP BEHAVIOUR DISORDER:  When you have REM sleep behavior disorder, you act out your dreams while you sleep. You lack the muscle paralysis most people experience while asleep. When the condition causes danger to you or anyone around you, it’s taken particularly seriously.

  • SOMNAMBULISM:  Sleep walking or somnambulism  is most common in children, who usually outgrow it by their teens. Sleepwalking usually occurs one to two hours after falling asleep at night. Often, sleepwalking is a random, harmless event.

  • GENETICS : Researchers have found a genetic basis for narcolepsy, a neurological disorder of sleep regulation that affects the control of sleep and wakefulness.

  • NIGHT SHIFT WORK :People who work at night often experience sleep disorders, because they cannot sleep when they start to feel drowsy. Their activities run contrary to their biological clocks.

  • MEDICATIONS : Many drugs can interfere with sleep, such as certain antidepressants, blood pressure medication, and over-the-counter cold medicine.

  • CHRONIC PHYSICAL CONDITIONS : Having an underlying condition like heartburn, heart failure, musculoskeletal disorders, kidney disease , thyroid disease, breathing problems ,medications etc.

  • MENTAL HEALTH DISORDER : Having an underlying mental health issue such as general anxiety, phobias, panic attacks, depression or other neurological disorder
